Remembering True Place
Remembering True Place
Drumbeats announce the tribal council.
People clothed in deerskin and cloth,
Walk across to the central tent,
Quietly gather and settle themselves.
These are people who know their place,
Under the sky, upon the earth.
Summoning help, inviting presence
From all the forces of the natural world.
Father Sky and Mother Earth
Sister the Coyote and Brother the Deer,
All green growth, all air they breathe,
both ancestors gone and relatives now.
This quiet tribe gives thanks to all
And asks for help with the coming task.
Unless the whole wide world is asked,
The answers they seek will not be true.
Would we could learn from these ancient ways.
First finding our place within the whole
Remembering what feeds and nurtures us
Before we choose to change the world,
Lovely and poignant and timely. Huge pouring rains in Iowa City this morning. Please stay sometime.
