 Awed by Weather


Has there ever in this world

been such beautiful snow?

Large soft flakes filling the air,

slowly descending, softening the ground.

Already surfaces piled high

with a puffy quilt of white.

And just now a brave woman

stoops through the flakes

to harvest hardy green kale

from a south-facing cold frame.

The world is a shining place

in this gentler landscape

and life goes on.

We Are in Tough Times

 It feels like a hard time to be alive here on earth right now. Not only is the season here turning toward winter, with frosts and freezes, leaves falling, plants going to sleep, and animals thinking about hibernating. It's also discouraging to look around on the planet and take in what a mess we humans are making right now. Our political chaos in this country is shocking enough. But when we look further away, there is the angry and devastating war abroad. And on a wider scale, we are heading as a planet for another extinction much faster than anyone could have predicted. Not tomorrow, or even in our lifetimes, but cosmically speaking just around the corner. It is all sobering. I usually wait to be inspired to write a blog post. But inspiration has been hard to find for a couple of weeks.  It is easy to feel alone and disengaged when we're in these kinds of days, at least for me. My energy goes down.   Speaking the Truth of Love A solitary week recovering from surgery. Cooped up inside my small home. Feeling too alone, too isolated, empty. I ask myself, what can I do to feel better? And the answer comes: sit quietly and wait. Sit quietly and let your mind open. Sitting quietly, it slowly comes to me that I am not really alone, not ever. My small being is one of millions and all of us tied together in one magic web. A web of unseen connections and alliances all held softly together by a great invisible force. The plants at my feet, the insects in the air, the tiny microorganisms underground the moon and sun, rain and winds all nestled together in one great interconnected whole. There are other creatures like me, waiting to heal. And creative energies helping that process. I am surrounded by a nurturing living world, an encompassing kind of love that binds all things.
